The Diversity Visa Lottery Program Green Card Lottery

The Diversity Visa Lottery Program, also known as the Green Card Lottery, originated with the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, eliminating ethnicity-based preferences. Initially focused on European immigrants, it evolved to include more Latin and Asian immigrants. After the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, the program began issuing Green Cards.

Expansion Phase:

The Immigration Act of 1990 increased the Green Cards to 40,000, adopting a computer-random selection process. In 1995, an additional 10,000 visas were added, totaling 50,000. The lottery became globally popular, providing equal opportunities for applicants worldwide to immigrate to the diverse United States.

Current Status:

Today, the U.S. stands out as one of the world’s most diverse nations, with over 300 languages spoken. The Green Card Lottery remains the exclusive program of its kind globally, allowing diverse immigrants to start anew.
